Is AI Really Coming for Our Jobs?

August 14, 20262 min read

If one AI concern stood out in the news this week, it was job security—again. But there’s an interesting twist: the evidence is becoming more nuanced than the headlines.

On August 12, The Guardian examined a question that gets surprisingly little attention: after years of predictions about an AI-driven employment catastrophe, where is the mass job destruction? Labor-market data so far doesn’t show AI eliminating jobs on anything close to the scale once predicted. Instead, AI appears to be changing what employers expect from workers, reducing some hiring and reorganizing tasks inside existing jobs. (The Guardian)

That doesn't mean workers are imagining the threat.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll published in June found that 53% of Americans worry AI could cost them or someone in their household a job. And this week, an Axios/Generation Lab poll found that 27% of Americans ages 18–34 say they or someone they know has already lost a job to AI. (Reuters)

There are real warning signs. CBS reported that AI was cited as the leading cause of announced layoffs for five consecutive months through July. Yet July's overall layoffs were also at their lowest level in two years. Economists told CBS that AI-related cuts remain heavily concentrated in technology rather than spreading throughout the economy. (CBS News)

That contradiction may tell us something important.

AI's first major effect on employment may not be millions of people suddenly losing their jobs. It may be subtler: companies hiring fewer people, expecting smaller teams to accomplish more, redesigning entry-level positions and placing greater value on employees who know how to work effectively with AI. Research on job postings is already finding both hiring shifts and redesign of existing roles. (Commonplace)

There's even evidence that wages deserve as much attention as layoffs. Recent research highlighted by Axios found substantially weaker wage growth in occupations highly exposed to AI. (Axios)

So, should we be worried?

Yes—but probably about transition rather than extinction.

The evidence doesn't currently support the idea that AI is making human workers obsolete on a massive scale. It does support the idea that work is changing quickly, and some people will experience that transition much more painfully than others.

The smartest response isn't pretending AI won't affect jobs—or assuming everyone is doomed.

It's preparing people to use it.

The emerging dividing line may ultimately be less about humans versus AI and more about people who learn to work effectively with AI versus those who aren't given the opportunity to adapt.

And that makes training, access and thoughtful implementation every bit as important as the technology itself.
